Outdoor Spots Locals Love

Outdoor Spots Locals Love
Spring is a special time in Christchurch. The city shakes off winter’s chill, blossoms start appearing, and the longer days make it the perfect season to get outdoors. Whether you’re a local, a new resident, or considering investing in Christchurch residential property, here are five favourite spring spots that showcase the best of our city – with a great coffee nearby to make your outing complete.

1. Hagley Park & the Botanic Gardens

Few places capture spring like Hagley Park. From daffodil fields to the cherry blossoms along Harper Avenue, it’s a stunning place for a stroll or picnic. The Botanic Gardens also burst into colour at this time of year.
☕ Coffee stop: Pop into Bunsen at the Arts Centre for a perfectly brewed cup (and maybe a croissant).

2. Port Hills Walks

For sweeping views over the city and out to the Southern Alps, you can’t beat a spring walk in the Port Hills. Tracks like the Rapaki Track or Victoria Park are family favourites – especially with the warmer weather returning.
☕ Coffee stop: Treat yourself to coffee and a scone at the iconic Sign of the Kiwi Café at the top of Dyers Pass.

3. New Brighton Beach & Hot Pools

Christchurch’s east side comes alive in spring. A beach walk followed by a relaxing soak at He Puna Taimoana hot pools makes for the perfect weekend activity.
☕ Coffee stop: Switch New Brighton is a local favourite for a flat white and something sweet after your beach walk.

4. Avon River Precinct

The Avon River winds its way through the heart of the city, and spring is the best time to enjoy it. Try punting on the Avon, or simply walk or cycle the riverside paths to see the gardens in bloom.
☕ Coffee stop: The Riverside Market and The Terrace precinct offer dozens of cafés and eateries – perfect for grabbing a coffee or brunch along the river.

5. Orana Wildlife Park

Spring means baby animals! From lambs and calves to some of the zoo’s exotic arrivals, Orana Wildlife Park is a family-friendly favourite this season.
☕ Coffee stop: Enjoy a coffee at the park café while watching giraffes stroll by – it’s a uniquely Christchurch experience.
